@Josh - you're wrong here, my friend. Photography and trespassing have absolutely nothing to do with one another. You can even legally make photographs WHILE you are trespassing, not that I recommend that. After the past couple years, I've lost concern for this issue, but I have recently read other complaints about PPG and other properties in downtown Pittsburgh. I've spoken to attorneys. I've spoken to police. I've spoken to media personalities. But the most significant research I've done, and that I suggest you do as well was to purchase and read a copy of Bert Krages' book "Legal Handbook for Photographers" (which can be found here: http://www.krages.com/lhp.htm or on amazon.com here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1584281944/bertpkrag-20 ). A condensed, printable version of the basic concepts that you can carry on your person can be found here: http://www.krages.com/ThePhotographersRight.pdf .

I have also learned through my research that, while PPG DOES own the property around its buildings, including the land upon which the surrounding roads were built, the roadways and a portion of the sidewalks constitute public easements. If you visit Market Square, cross through the breezeway to PPG Place and look down at the edge of the sidewalk along 4th Avenue, you will see inset metal markers marking the property line. If you stand on the side closest to the roadway, you are within the public easement and no longer on the private property of PPG.

If you are harassed by security, you should ask the guard's name (which he will not give you). Such harassment is illegal - it's a violation of your civil rights - for you to be harassed by anyone, be it a security guard, the police or even the Mayor, if you are not breaking any law.

Last winter, I scheduled an evening portrait session at PPG Place and simply called the security manager for the property and asked him to ensure that I would not be harassed during my session. Not only did he accommodate my request, he even offered his guards' services to provide any assistance I needed. I did not take him up on the offer, but the shoot went flawlessly.

- PPG's buildings are not protected under copyright, trademark or any other creative works law; nor is any other architecture throughout the United States. That is not the purpose or intent of copyright law.
- PPG' security force can not "trespass" you from the public easement along 4th Avenue
- PPG's security force WILL approach you and harass you
- PPG' security force has no right to restrict the use of a tripod for photography, except where they may try to make the case that you may be "obstructing the public right of way" (they'd have more success prosecuting you for loitering)
- PPG's security force has no right to restrict photography in any way even while you are on their private property - the two matters are separate and distinct

I hope this helps. Read Krages' book for yourself. Be informed and know your rights. Ignorance is NOT bliss.

Did you ever file a lawsuit against Circuit City? If so what happened if not then why? Could you not get anyone to take it or did the lawyers say you were in the wrong???

This is so crazy. I visited Pittsburgh yesterday and got the same very impolite "no pictures of the buildings".
I've visited probably around 35 US states and around 15 countries and this is the first time when a security guard makes so much fuss about taking a picture in a public place.
They should hide these PPG buildings and make them ugly like the soul of their guards. This way nobody will care about taking pictures of their buildings.
Too bad for Pittsburgh. This behavior scares tourists away. These is not a security concern but lack of common sense.

This happened to me also in the last 6 months, today is 4/27/2009 or so. After having my internet shutoff it took about 5 or 6 calls, moving from room to room, testing down in the lobby and testing outside the hotel to see if it was something wrong with my laptop.

Finally after doing all the testing and working with many tech support guys it was discovered that my access was revoked, like yours. I had been downloading a large iso from work. Once the root of the problem was discovered the tech was able to reinstate me.

I almost always use Hilton while traveling but I am now at another Marriott. here in the DC area. The speedtest.net test says I have a 256kb connection with AT&T Worldwide, but when I do my ftp I am limited to 30kb. I have called the tech support 4 or 5 times and talked to someone different each time.

They are either playing dumb or just don't know what the problem is, as far as they know it is a 256kb connection.

Now I remember why I avoid Marriott for business travel.

All so true Miguel, all so true. Very sorry to hear about your grandfather. Not sure if you know but I lost my dad in JUly of last year. I've since seen your mom a few times and it was great talking to her. I am still indebted to you for your help last summer. I'll be emailing shortly about something new. Take care of yourself and hope all is well.

Ever since I read the story of your illegal detention by Circuit City personnel and the police of Brooklyn, Ohio, I have wondered whether or not you've pursued your right to prefer charges for false imprisonment against the arresting officer and the two Circuit City employees. It seems to me that under Ohio law you have a solid case against all three people involved in illegally detaining you, as well as Circuit City as a corporation. Your business, I realize. I just hope that it works for you to be as aggressive in the defense of your civil rights as possible; I can see how it might not (threats against your family, etc. by local Neanderthals).

Here in Denver, Circuit City is holding a "going out of business" sale, so I guess it's for real - unless this is simply a gimmick for CC to unload all their inventory which has gone obsolete in the past eighteen months. It's amazing how many suck, er, customers will fall for "fantastic deals" on stuff that doesn't work as well as brand new gear that's cheaper.

I've been less than impressed by the value Circuit City offers its customers for years. It's been five years since I've darkened their doors. I hope that their former employees find good jobs elsewhere, but frankly, Circuit City's business practices betray a multi-layered case of incompetence. Under our free market system companies are just as free to fail dismally as to succeed. A lesson our nation's banks ought to have learned.
